Coming To America Sequel in DevelopmentĀ

Coming to America is a 1988 (the year I was born, shit) classic comedy about  Prince Akeem (Eddie Murphy)  of fictional African nation of Zamunda who travels to America to find a bride in order to avoid going through with an arranged marriage. It’s an incredibly funny movie, it’s one I grew up watching and I’ve always gone back to every few years and always found really entertaining. It always felt like a self contained movie, a one and done if you will and I never thought a year sequel or spinoff or dare I speak the words ‘shared universe’ would ever be necessary.

Now reports come out that the writers of the original movie Barry Blaustein and David Sheffield have been tasked to write a sequel to the comedy hit. There’s been no word however if any, let alone just Eddie Murphy, of the original cast would be returning. It seems odd to me to announce this if they haven’t had talks with cast members to at least cue up cameos. Nothing has been reveled about potential plot so it is unknown if they even plan to Base this around Prince Akeem at all. This could be a story about his son or daughter taking a similar trip to find love. Or they could make this about a prince or princess of a different country in a dreaded ‘shared universe’ scenario.

If this is to be a sequel with Eddie Murphy, Arsenio Hall and James Earl Jones then I would be most worried about the movie falling into similar problems abouts other late sequels such as Zoolander 2 or Dumb and Dumber Too.  Other of those movies have fantastic originals, I love Zoolander and Dumb and Dumber but the sequels set 10-20 years later just didn’t work. The biggest reason for me was that there was no growth. The characters were exactly the same as they were in the originals. The reason of having a movie set that much later is so the audience can see what the characters are up to now and that doesn’t work if they’re just doing the same old shit, depending on the age of the characters it can just be sad instead of charming. So if this is a sequel for the characters I just hope there is some growth and change in what they are up to.

What do you think? Are you excited for a sequel to Coming to America? Let me know in the comments. Thanks for reading and until next time, take it easy.

Thor Ragnarok trailer

Last night, probably about 1am I was getting ready to go to bed and what do I spy has dropped? The dang Thor Ragnarok trailer. So of course I was going to have to watch it 10 times right then and there. This trailer was really cool, it definitely has a different feel to it than the other stand alone Thor movies. I’ve seen comparisons saying it looks and feels like a Guardians of the Galaxy trailer and really that makes sense since the majority of the movie seems to be set out in the depths of the galaxy where the Guardians are off hanging out. I loved the music choice here too. It seems a no brainer to use The Immigrant Song because of the themes in that song but Led Zeppelin are notorious for not letting movies use their songs. I especially liked that it was the proper version of the song and not just some slowed down cover like, even most other trailers these days.

Thor looked great here, as a character he seems like he’s less like he was in other movies and more like he is in those Team Thor skits and I’m really not mad about that. Cate Blanchett looks terrifying as Hela. That moment where she crushes Mjolnir is savage and it looks like she’s going to be an absolute force in this movie. I loved seeing Hulk in all his gladiator armour and can’t wait to see him in action. The little glimpses we got of Thessa Thompson, Karl Urban and Tom Hiddleston looked cool. I’m even digging the look of Jeff Goldblum in this. I know people are saying he looks stupid and I understand why but I can’t help it is just think he looks glorious.

This has really become one of my most anticipated movies this year. I might even be more keen for this than Spider-man Homecoming and Spider-man is my all time favourite character. It has been said that this was going to be the most humorous Thor movie to date and there have been concerns about that but judging by this teaser it looks like they’ve found a good balance of light and fun with heavy and epic.

Are you looking forward to Thor Ragnarok? What did you think of the teaser trailer? Let me know in the comments. Also let me know if you want my thoughts on the Justice League and Spider-man Homecoming trailers. Thanks for reading and until next time, take it easy.

Venom movie still happeningĀ

Back when the Amazing Spider-man movies were still happening, one of the spin off movies announced in that universe was a Venom and Carnage movie that, from memory, wasn’t to feature Spider-man at all. The outcry from that announcement was that it was a mistake. Then the deal with Marvel Studios happened and the Spider verse movies were all scrapped but there remained hints that a stand alone Venom movie could still be planned. So the MCU gets to share Spider-man and his debut in Civil War was fantastic and the first stand alone, the upcoming Spiderman Homecoming is one of my most anticipated movies of the year. With all of this though Sony still announced their own animated Spider-man movie based on the Miles Morales version of the character that would be completely separate from the MCU. There’s nothing wrong with that plan at all, I’m looking forward to that and I hope its a catalyst to one day seeing get that character in a live action movie one day.

So today the announcement comes that the Venom movie has itself a release date in October of 2018 along with the news that it would indeed be separate from the MCU and no version of Spider-man would feature in it. Separate from MCU and no Spider-man. WHY FUCKING BOTHER?!?!?!?!?! This idea is just dumb and will confuse a lot of people. People know the origins of Venom are deeply connected to Spider-man and unless they keep tabs on movie news and everything they will be expecting Tom Holland’s Spider-man to show up. He never will and they will be disappointed. Also what story would they tell then? Would it be a different origin? Would he be hero, villain or anti-hero? What other characters would appear? Will anybody care to have these questions answered? I love the character of Venom and especially the dynamic between him and Spidey. I would much prefer the character of Eddie Brock be established for a couple of movies then become Venom and take on this MCU Spider-man.

What do you think? Are you keen for a COMPLETELY separate Venom movie? Even with it being produced by the people who lost themselves control of Spider-man?  Comment, let me know. Thanks for reading this here thing and till next time, take it easy.

The Matrix gearing up for a reboot

The Matrix is one of the most iconic movies of all time. That’s just a fact that can’t be denied. It’s so influential that for years afterwards, movie after movie kept spoofing, parodying and paying homage to the ground breaking action and effects. Then the sequels happened. Reloaded isn’t that bad in my humble and unprofessional opinion but Revolutions is just a big fucking slog of nothing, it’s really not good.

Now I’ve said it before (probably, I can’t really remember) that I have no issue with things being remade or rebooted because if they’re good, you have a great new thing to watch but if they’re bad you still have the original to enjoy. It’s a different discussion though of what movies are in need of a remake or reboot. For example, as awesome as Escape from New York is I am really looking forward to seeing the long awaited remake and hope it’s done right. Also, the new Scarface which is in development sounds like it could be incredible and will of course be the second remake of that property. There are the stinkers obviously such as Point Break which is just not good.

The question now is, will this new Matrix movie be a completely new remake, or is it going to be a new story set in the same continuity of the original three movies. Word is, and it’s certainly the better option, is that it will be the latter. If this is true it’s unclear whether this new film would take place before or after the events of the other movies but I would be fine either way. I admit I have thought about what a fourth movie in the franchise could be. I won’t get into that here but if anybody ever wants to know it I’ll put it out there in some way.

Reports are saying that Michael B. Jordan is the top pick to lead the project and that would be a huge buy for me. The more I think about it, there really is nobody I would prefer to lead this movie. There are certainly other people I would be fine with such as Donald Glover, Miles Teller, Brie Larson, Thessa Thompson and the list could go on.

Truly I think this could be something really cool if it’s a continuation of the same universe. You wouldn’t necessarily need to include any of the original cast members but it could be cool, and it would be good to nitpick for any references and easter eggs referencing the originals. Now I don’t want this to look like I’m just over the moon excited about this, it could be a complete load of old arse but there are ways to make this work and I hope its the direction it is heading. Unless they do just do a complete remake in which case fuck that shit.

What do you think? Are you up for a new trip into the Matrix? Would you be cool with a complete remake or would you prefer a continuation? Let me know. Thanks for reading and till next time, take it easy.

Matthew Vaughn up for Man of Steel 2

The DCEU has been having a hard time for the past year and there have been many instances that have proved that they may not be handling it all to well. Recently though they have been making some moves that could just turn everything around.

I’m not the biggest fan of Man of Steel, every time I try to rewatched it I spend most of the movie wondering why I didn’t love it but then by the end I’m just so thankful it’s over. It’s a slog to get through but I’m not one of the people who thinks Zack Snyder’s sucks as a director. He’s hit and miss for me with his movies but I would never say he isn’t talented. I am happy though hat he isn’t directing Man of Steel 2, I think it would be a good move for him to step away, at least from directing this franchise for a while.

So now the top choice over at WB to direct the movie is Matthew Vaughn. Nothing here is a done deal, this isn’t definitely going to happen but this gets me very excited. I stopped getting excited about these movies but this gets me back there. Vaughn is a director whose work I have never not liked. He’s brilliant. Remember, the X-men franchise was as good as dead after The Last Stand and X-men Origins: Wolverine flopped with audiences and critics, then he came in and did First Class and completely, undeniably brought he franchise back.

What concerns me if this does become a deal is there have been so many directors have dropped out of these DCEU movies because of creative issues with the studio. Matthew Vaughn does not seem like the kind of director to deal with that so if they do book him, WB would be smart to just hold back and let him do his thing.

I’m really excited about this, are you? Do you like Matthew Vaughn as a director? What your favorite of his movies? Let me know in the comments. Thanks for reading and till next time, take it easy.

Ending of ‘Logan’ (SPOILERS!!!!!)

So a picture was posted to twitter of a couple of screen grabs that has people kind of going nuts. The top pic is from The Wolverine of the scene where the character of Yukio (Rila Fukushima) explains the premonition she saw of Logan’s death, that he would be lying on his back, surrounded by blood, holding his own heart in his hand. Then the second pic shows Logan’s death in Logan specifically a close up of him covered in blood, lying on his back, holding Laura’s  (his daughter pretty much) hand. The implications of this side by side comparison are very poetic and very beautiful and they suggested that director James Mangold was planning this all along. Mangold himself even responded seemingly confirming this and now people are flipping out that he had been planning this beautifully tragic ending since The Wolverine. I dont think that’s what he meant nor what happened.

I honestly don’t believe they had this end for the Wolverine character mapped out like that so far, instead I would think it more likely that when they were crafting the story for Logan, they went back and watched The Wolverine and saw an opportunity for something great. My evidence towards this is that the scene of him holding his own heart covered in blood took place in that movie, it definitely played out. Also, they had no idea at the time what story, if any, they were going to tell next and Hugh Jackman hadn’t decided to end his run as Wolverine yet. I do buy that they’ve made a connection there though, even if that’s me just being optimistic, because it really does make an already incredibly emotional and heartbreaking moment even more powerful.

What do you think? Do you think it was planned all along or do you think it’s a coincidence? Let me know! Thanks for reading and till next time, take it easy.

First images of ‘Thor: Ragnarok’

If you haven’t guessed by now, I’m a fucking nerd and I love comic book movies. One of my most anticipated movies this year is Thor: Ragnarok, the third stand alone outing for the God of thunder. I really like the first Thor but Thor: The Dark World was really forgettable I felt. This movie however has my full attention. The concept is really cool, ragnarok, basically being the end times and they’re throwing in some Planet Hulk goodness? Yeah I’m in. Also you can’t forget about the cast, not only do you have the return of Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston and Mark Ruffalo reprising their roles as Thor, Loki and Bruce Banner/ Hulk respectively but your also throwing in the likes of Cate Blanchett,  Jeff Goldblum and Benediction Cumberbatch as Hela, Grandmaster and Doctor Strange.

Earlier, Entertainment Weekly dropped some images from the movie and I just want Ted to throw a few of my thoughts on a couple of them out there. There’s a few so I’ll just say here all of these are courtesy of Entertainment Weekly and Marvel Studios.

First of all is this image of Thor and Thessa Tnompson as Valkyrie. The first thing to notice is Thor has had a dramatic haircut. I dig it, I’m all for the new look. Also you notice his different armour, it’s more gladiator style and I think it looks pretty rad. Another thing is Thor appears to be holding a weapon that isn’t Mjolnir which is interesting. I also really dig the look of Valkarie and I have a feeling she is going to steel this as a total bad arse.

Next I’ve got Loki who also appears to have some new threads which looks great and he seems to be in a fairly relaxed position, perhaps enjoying some gladiator battles. As the unquestionably greatest villain the MCU has produced I’m really looking forward to seeing him again and can’t wait to see how he factors in to all this.

Here we have Cate Blanchett as Hela. Now I’m not all that familiar with the character but I know she is the goddess of death. Blanchett is one of the greatest actresses out right now and she looks terrifying in this image. I cant wait to see what damage she is going to do, she definitely looks like someone I wouldn’t want to fuck with.

Jeff Goldblum as the Grandmaster looks all kinds of weird and I love it. The character is, I believe, is the brother of the Collector who has been played by Benicio del Toro in a couple of small appearances. The two characters definitely look like, even they could be related and there’s nothing about Jeff Goldblum being in something that you can hate on, the man is just a delight.

The last image I’m looking at is this image of Bruce Banner and Thor. It’s hard to say whether this is the first time they see each other or if they’re celebrating something awesome, either way they look happy to see each other. The movie has been described as a buddy road movie in space and this image throws evidence towards that.

As and ways thanks for reading. Are you looking forward to Thor: Ragnarok? What did you think of these images? Let me know in the comments. Till next time, take it easy.
