Lord and Miller Leaving ‘Han Solo Movie’

When it was first announced that there was going to be an anthology movie about the younger years of Han Solo I, like most people, didn’t understand the reasoning behind it. Then a Cole of things happened that made me think it could work. The casting of Woody Harrelson was a strong move and casting Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian was a stroke of fucking genius but it was mostly having the directing team of Phil Lord and Chris Miller that really gave this movie hope. These are the guys who took 21 Jump Street and The Lego Movie, two movies that had absolutely no business being good and turned in incredibly sharp and very funny movies.

Having them on this movie gave it credibility and was a huge reason people were paying attention, so it was a surprise to see that they have had to depart the project over ‘creative differences’. The really troubling thing about this news is that they’ve already been filming the movie for several months. I’m not sure what these creative differences could be or why they took this long to be this big a problem but it’s never a good sign when a project hits this level of turmoil. That’s not to say the movie is doomed though. Lucasfilm said in a statement that a replacement director would be announced soon.

Whoever it is that takes over the project really has their work cut out for them. Changing a director at this stage is costly. It’s going to cost a lot of money to hold production, sign a new director and get the shoot done before the cast and crew have to move on to other projects/ commitments. The production cost of this movie is about to rise higher than anybody wanted it to. Another issue is, who’s movie is it going to be? How much of Lord and Millers stuff that they shot be used? Will the new director have to resort a lot of it? Will they even have the authority to? The studio may just bring someone in that they can boss around and they’ll make the movie their way. Or could they possibly get someone with a clear vision who can take what’s already been done and run with it. Either way this movie could turn into a choppy, incoherent mess or they could pull it off and make something decent despite shifty circumstances. I’m more inclined to believe the former is going to happen which really sucks arse because I truly hope this movie can still be good. It possible but I’m skeptical at this stage.

What do you think? Do you think the movies fallen too far to get up at this point or do you think they’re going to recover?  Let me know in the comments. Thanks for reading and until next time, take it easy.
