James Gunn Returning for Guardians 3

For a while now James Gunn has been getting questioned on whether or not he would be returning for a third outing with the galactic family of misfits. Until now he hasn’t given a conclusive answer leading people to speculate on who might take over if he decided not to return. While gearing up for the coming press tour for the highly anticipated Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2, Gunn took to Facebook to pre-emptively answer a couple of questions he knew would be asked a lot. One of those was of course his involvement in a possible third instalment for the franchise. Here’s what he had to say.

So, yes, I’m returning to write and direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

In the end, my love for Rocket, Groot, Gamora, Star-Lord, Yondu, Mantis, Drax, and Nebula – and some of the other forthcoming heroes – goes deeper than you guys can possibly imagine, and I feel they have more adventures to go on and things to learn about themselves and the wonderful and sometimes terrifying universe we all inhabit.  And, like in both Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, we will work on creating the story that goes beyond what you expect.

This is fantastic news. If you’ve ever heard Gunn talk about making these movies you know how much love and care he puts into them. How he pays such close attention to every detail to make sure the finished product is of the highest quality. That’s the kind of guy you want holding onto a beloved franchise.

There were concerns, I’ll admit I even had them myself, that if a director stays with a project too long they can tend to get stale and end up shifting the bed in a way with third instalments to trilogies. Even when a third part to a trilogy is good, often times they’re still not as good as the first two films. James Gunn also addressed this.

There is a history in Hollywood of haphazard endings to trilogies, and I didn’t want to become a part of that dishonorable tradition of pretending the third one doesn’t exist.  I couldn’t do it for the money, and I couldn’t do it because it was what other people wanted me to do.  I needed to do it because it was what I needed to do. I have never made choices in my career based on anything other than passion and love for the stories and characters, and I didn’t want to start now.

This is exactly what I want to hear as a fan. I like that he took his time to decide whether he would return. Instead of saying he’ll do it because they offer him more money or because it’s what people expect he is motivated by passion and I have nothing g but respect for that. He had to decide what he would want the next few years of his life doing and if he decided this is where he was tshirt to focus his creativity then I am all in. As for where the movie will sit in the greater MCU, Gunn had this to say.

Much of what’s happened in the MCU for the past ten or so years has been leading, in a big way, to the Avengers’ Infinity War.  Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will happen after all that.  It will conclude the story of this iteration of the Guardians of the Galaxy, and help catapult both old and new Marvel characters into the next ten years and beyond. I will be working side-by-side with Kevin Feige and the gang to help design where these stories go, and make sure the future of the Marvel Cosmic Universe is as special and authentic and magical as what we have created so far.

There is so much speculation that could come from that that I’ll leave for much smarter and more comic savvy people than me to run wild with. As for me I’m just excited and look forward to more incredible films to enjoy.

As I write this I realised I’ll be seeing Guardians vol 2 in just one week and I am so jazzed, it looks incredible.

Are you excited about James Gunn returning for Guardians 3? If not who would you prefer? Let me know in the comments. Thanks for reading and until next time, take it easy.
