Last night I stayed up again so I could watch the live stream of the Star Wars Celebration The Last Jedi panel. This stream was a lot smoother and it didn’t cut out on me once which was great. It was a great panel too, it was moderated by Josh Gad which was great and involved most of the cast as well as director Rian Johnson and Kathleen Kennedy. The panel was great and everybody spoke what they could about the movie. Before showing the trailer they revealed a brand new poster for the movie.
I love this poster, it is so incredible. I love the half faces of Luke and Kylo Ren, and it’s interesting that Kylo doesn’t have a mask on here. It’s also really interesting the beam on Rey’s lightsaber turning from blue to red.
Then they revealed the trailer and it absolutely blew me away. It starts with this shot of Rey possibly exhausted from training. It runs through many images of really beautiful shots and action packed teases.
There are more scenes of Rey training and learning to utilise her powers which I can’t wait to see how powerful she can become.
There’s a really cool shot of Kylo Ren’s shattered helmet which is intriguing. Did he smash it himself? Did somebody else do it? Does he feel he doesn’t need it, or doesn’t deserve it?
There’s this shot of presumably Luke with R2-D2. There’s speculation that this is a flashback to when his new Jedi were destroyed which led to his going into exile.
This shot of Kylo Ren looks really cool, it shows he still has the cross guard lightsaber and that Scar across his face after his run in with Rey. When I first saw this it looked like he was getting a yellow glow to his eyes like a true sith when they fully give themselves to the dark side. Upon further inspection though it just appears to be reflection from his saber.
Throughout the trailer you can hear through voice over Luke training Rey to focus, asking what she can see. She responds that she sees “Light, darkness and balance” referencing the light and dark sides of the force and the balance they must share. Luke responds with “There’s so much more” presumably meaning that since we left Luke in Return of the Jedi he has discovered things about the force that we haven’t heard before and that there might be a different path other than the black and white, night and day ideals of Jedi and Sith. The trailer ends with Luke of all expletives saying the words “The one truth I know is it’s time for the Jedi to end” which is such a powerful line. Without the context of the movie it’s impossible to determine what he means by this. Could this be the start of the movie before he agrees to train Rey? Or could he be saying he will train her but not as a Jedi, as something else? Could he have turned to darkness? Probably not that one but there’s always a chance. Also there’s still no word on the parentage of Rey.
What did you think of the trailer for The Last Jedi? What are some of your speculations? Let me know in the comments. Thanks for reading and until next time, take it easy.
