Thoughts: ‘Live Action’ Lion King casting

SSo last year after the phenomenal success of The Jungle Book, directed by Jon Favreau,  it came as no surprise that more live action adaptations of Disney classics were announced. One of those of course was The Lion King and it was also announced that Favreau was returning get to direct. Although it’s weird to call it a ‘Live action’ version since it will be completely CG but I’m sure the animals and the landscape will look scarily realistic just like in The Jungle Book.

With The Jungle Book so fresh I wasn’t really expecting much news to come out in terms of casting or anything quite so soon but earlier today Favreau dropped a couple of huge pieces of news in the casting of Simba and Mufasa.

This casting isn’t too surprising, James Earl Jones is almost as well known for voicing Mufasa in the original movie as he is for voicing Darth Vader. Although the two movies will be different it’ll still be nice to hear his voice as this incredible character once again.

Thinking about this there’s no surprise here either that Donald Glover is cast as Simba when you think about how his career has progressed of late. He received praise for his role in The Martian, his hit TV series Atlanta has gotten rave reviews and won him a golden globe and oh yeah, he was cast as Lando Calrissian in the upcoming Han Solo movie, another Disney property. This is great casting. Glover is an incredibly talented man be it his acting, writing or his music and it’s great to see someone who works as hard as he does get the recognition they deserve. I imagine he’ll probably only be voicing the adult Simba and they’ll cast a child actor to voice cub Simba.

At this point it’s unclear when we will get any other casting announcements but I’ll be interested to see if any more original cast members come back. I wouldn’t hate seeing Jeremy Irons return as Scar although truth be told I also wouldn’t  hate if Idris Elba returned to villain mode for the role.

Just some quick thoughts before I finish, I was about 5 years old when the original movie came out and to this day a love it. Now it have young kids of my own and it’s cool to think we’ll all have our own generational version of these movies that we can grow up with. I think forward to showing these disney movies to my kids, classic versions and live action. As you can tell I’m excited for this movie, what do you think? Let me know, let’s talk about it. As always thanks for reading and take it easy.
